Caption: Flooding in China (Image 1 of 2). Infrared satellite image of the high water levels in Lake Dongting Hu, Hunan Province, China. The lake (dark blue) stretches from upper right to lower left. Vegetation appears red, while water standing in fields, such as rice paddies, is light blue. The lake is enclosed by flood walls (blue/grey). At bottom left is the city Qionghu. Flooding, which began in northern China soon after this image was taken, killed over 3000 people and destroyed 5 million houses. This image is from the SPOT-4 satellite in May. Image resolution: 10 metres. To view this area after flooding see image E160/117.
