Caption: Flooding in China (Image 2 of 2). Infrared satellite image of the flooded Lake Dongting Hu (blue) in Hunan Province, China. In this image vegetation appears red. The lake is still partly enclosed by flood walls (brown). At bottom left is the city of Qionghu. Flooding, which began in northern China in June due to heavy rainfall, killed over 3000 people and destroyed 5 million houses. The silting up of water overflow areas due to soil erosion in deforested areas was also to blame. This image is from the SPOT-4 satellite in August. Image resolution: 10 metres. To view this area before flooding see image E160/116.
