Caption: Flood defence model of Venice, Italy. Venice is a city on an island in a coastal lagoon. The two men are standing on the main island, separated from Giudecca Island (lower right) by a wide canal. The narrower Canale Grande runs from their feet to the left, bisecting the island. Numerous other canals run through the city. Severe floods, due to winds and tides, are predicted to worsen due to land subsidence and global warming. A wide variety of defences, part of the MOSE project, are tested on this model of the entire 550-square-kilometre lagoon. The main defence will be moveable barriers across the sea inlets to the lagoon. Photographed in Padova in 2003.
