Caption: Flood defences, Venice. Pumping water during work to raise the level of part of the city of Venice, Italy. This will protect against extreme floods, due to winds and tides, that are predicted to worsen because of global warming. The construction work is carefully planned to avoid altering the historic architecture that attracts tourists. This view looks from the water's edge at the Il Redentore church on Giudecca Island. The church was built from 1576-1591. This work is part of the MOSE flood defence project, the main part of which will be a set of moveable barriers across the sea inlets to Venice's lagoon. Photographed in 2003.
