Caption: Flooding on the Mississippi River, 1903. Worker supervising convict labourers repairing a levee breach on the Mississippi River, USA. The levee is a bank of earth (centre) built to stop the river (left) flooding the surrounding land (flooded at right). The breach is near Lagrange, Mississippi, USA. The Mississippi, one of the longest rivers in the USA, flows over 3700 kilometres north to south across the USA. It has the third largest drainage basin in the world, and heavy rainfall can cause massive flooding further downstream. Some of the worse floods in the USA have occurred on the Mississippi River.
