Caption: Great Mississippi Flood, 1927. Cars on a flooded road in Illinois, USA, on 25 March 1927. The road runs between the towns of Mounds and Cairo. This is part of the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, when heavy rains caused the Mississippi River to burst its banks and levees in 145 places in six states, flooding thousands of square kilometres of land up to 10 metres deep in water. This was one of the worst floods ever in the history of the USA. The 3700-kilometre-long Mississippi has the third largest drainage basin in the world, and has a long history of flooding.
