Caption: Sharora mudslide. Aerial photograph of the mudslide that buried the village of Sharora in Tajikistan, USSR, on 23 January 1989. The mudslide, which was triggered by an earthquake following heavy rain, was around 2 kilometres wide and buried the village to a depth of 18 to 20 metres. The moving mass of mud travelled around a kilometre at speeds of 70 kilometres per hour, and struck during the night. 274 people were killed here and in two other villages.
