Caption: Indonesian forest fires. Satellite image of the clouds of smoke caused by forest fires in Indonesian Borneo (centre). North is at top. The smoke is yellow, natural clouds are white, & vege- tation is green. Malaysian Borneo (Sarawak, upper centre), the Phillipines (upper right) & Sumatra (lower left) have also been affected by the dang- erous smog caused by the smoke. The fires were started deliberately to clear forest for agricul- ture. Image taken by a NOAA satellite's Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer on 22 September 1997; it has a resolution of 4 kilometres.
