Caption: Indonesian forest fires (second of 5 images). Infrared satellite image of forest fires in Indon- esian Borneo (Kalimantan). North is at top. In infrared, lush vegetation is red, water is black, bare ground is light blue/grey and smoke clouds are light blue. Irrigation canals to the west of the river Barito mark out the square fields of a plantation. The smoke from fires in this area led to a thick smog forming over much of southeast Asia. The fires were started deliberately to clear land for agriculture. Image taken by a SPOT satell- ite on 29 July 1997, covering an area of 35x25 kilometres. (See also E168/017 & E168/019 to 021.).
