Caption: Indonesian forest fires (fifth of 5 images). Infra red satellite image of forest fires in Indonesian Borneo (Kalimantan). North is at top. In infrared, lush vegetation is red, water is black, bare earth is light blue/grey & smoke clouds are light blue. A plantation with irrigation canals to the west of the river Barito has been cleared by fires, as has much forest to the east. The smoke from fires in this area led to smog forming over much of south- east Asia. The fires were started deliberately to clear land for agriculture. Image taken by a SPOT satellite on 8 September 1997, covering an area of 35x25 kilometres. (See also E168/017 to 020.)
