Caption: Forest fires smoke. Satellite image of large plumes of smoke (yellow/brown, upper centre) seen against cloud (white) over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of North America (seen at upper right). North is at top. The smoke comes from forest fires burning in Oregon and California, USA. Above the smoke are several straight white lines. These are cloud tracks formed by the exhaust of smokestacks on ships. The circular cloud pattern seen at lower centre is Tropical Storm Elida. This image is from the SeaWiFS camera on the OrbView-2 satellite, and was acquired on 29 July 2002.
