Caption: Californian wild fires. Satellite image of the wild fires that raged in California, USA, in late October 2003. Huge plumes of smoke are seen being blown out over the Pacific Ocean. High winds fanned the flames, helping to spread and maintain the fires. The fires covered a wide area of southern California, and killed several people. Hundreds of homes were destroyed and a state of emergency was declared. This image was taken on 26th October 2003 by the MODIS instrument on board the Terra satellite.
