Caption: Forest fires, Portugal, August 2003. Image 1 of 2. Coloured satellite image of forest fires (red) burning in southern Portugal. Smoke (blue/grey) is seen blowing northwards. The land is green/brown, while clouds are white/light blue. The ocean is a dark blue. Forest fires devastated Portugal during a European-wide heatwave in the summer of 2003. Record-breaking temperatures in Portugal left the vegetation tinder-dry. At least 19 people died in the forest fires, and there was massive economic damage. These areas of intense fires are to the north-east of Lisbon. Image taken by NASA's Aqua satellite at 14:00 GMT on 3 August 2003. For this image in true-colour, see image E168/057.
