Caption: Burnt sunflowers (Helianthus sp.) in a field after a forest fire. Sunflowers are grown commercially for their seeds and oil. These ones, in Portugal, were damaged by one of the fires that devastated the area during a European-wide heatwave in the summer of 2003. Record-breaking temperatures in Portugal had left the vegetation tinder-dry. As well as causing massive economic damage, the fires killed at least 19 people.
