Caption: Forest fire. Satellite image of smoke (white, top right) from a forest fire close to Lake Arrowhead (black, lower left), California, USA. North is at bottom. The image was obtained in infrared (water is black; vegetation is red). The image was taken on 28 October 2003. This fire is one of a series of such fires that devastated southern California in late 2003. The severity of the fires was due to a combination of dry vegetation and a seasonal wind, the south-westerly Santa Ana wind blowing smoke towards top right, that spread the fires. Populated areas (grey) are seen around Lake Arrowhead, which is about 3.5 kilometres across. Image taken by the Ikonos satellite.
