Caption: Arctic ozone hole research. Night-time launch of balloons with experimental payloads during the CHEOPS-3 project (CHEmistry of Ozone in Polar Stratosphere) at Kiruna, Sweden, in January & February 1990. Scientists from France, Germany & the U.S. conducted a number of experiments including measurements of atmospheric ozone & sampling or measuring various related pollutants, such as hydrocarbons & oxides of nitrogen. Some balloons reached an altitude of 28 km, passing through the Polar Stratospheric Cloud (PSC)formations. PSCs contain ice particles which are suspected as acting as substrates for the chemical reactions that destroy ozone.
