Caption: Lightning research. The control station for a meteorological research flight into a thunderstorm. The controllers speak to the pilot of the extensively-strengthened aircraft used to fly through the turbulent, freezing core of thunderstorm cells. The aircraft is tracked on radar, which also plots the position of the storm cell. Instruments carried by the aircraft provide data on temperature, wind vectors, pressures and other parameters within the cloud. The control station, belonging to a National Weather Service field centre, was photographed at Cape Canaveral, Florida.
