Caption: Fulgurite. A sample of fulgurite, formed by lightning. When lightning strikes a sand bed, the electric charge may follow particular courses through the sand. The region around the discharge becomes very intensely heated, fusing the sand to form these tube-like objects underground. Fulgurites have been found up to 6 cm in diameter and many metres in length. This sample was found in Arizona.
