Caption: Weather station. A solar powered weather station on a moor. The device on top is an anemometer, or wind gauge. The rotating cups (upper left) measure wind speed, while the vane (top right) measures wind direction. The central solar panel powers el- ectronic circuitry in the weather station. The louvred cylinder in the centre left contains a thermometer and humidity probe. The slots allow air to pass over these instruments while shielding them from direct sunlight. In the centre right is a rain gauge. This weather station automatically feeds data via cable into a computerized national weather-monitoring system. Photographed near Woodhead, Derbyshire, UK.
