Caption: Field mill in lightning research. Field mills are used to measure electrostatic forces in storm clouds by scientists investigating the conditions that produce lightning. This mill was suspended under a tethered weather balloon that was launched into a storm cloud soon after a severe electrical storm. The balloon was torn from its moorings and swept out to sea by high winds. Photographed at Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA.
