Caption: Storm research. Computer graphic showing weather patterns in three dimensions as part of the FASTEX (Fronts & Atlantic Storm Tracks Experiment) study. The three-dimensional weather patterns (upper frame) have been processed from data collected by an airborne double-beam Doppler ASTRAIA/ELDORA radar which monitors air movements. In the lower frame is a map of air pressure, with lines (isobars) linking areas of equal pressure. The FASTEX study is designed to discover what factors turn a normal low-pressure weather system (cyclone) into a storm, and to use these in computer models to improve weather forecasting.
