Caption: Thermometer. Two thermometers for measuring air temperatures. They are each comprised of a hollow, evacuated glass column with a bulb at the bottom which contains mercury that is dyed blue or red. The mercury expands as the air temperature increases. This means that the level of the mercury rises up the tube and can be read off using a scale. The thermometer on the left is calibrated in units of degrees Fahrenheit whilst the other is marked in degrees Fahrenheit and degrees Centigrade or Celsius.
