Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Atmospheric laser radar. Scientist Dan Walsh & an ultraviolet laser radar (lidar) that measures atmospheric aerosols, ozone levels & temperatures. The scientist is recording the oper- ating parameters of the lidar, which projects 2 vertical beams at different wavelengths. Radiation scattered back is analysed to determine the strat- osphere's composition at altitudes of 15-75 kilo- metres (km). Stratospheric aerosols come from vol- canic eruptions, & are mainly comprised of sulph- uric acid & water. Ozone gas, mainly found above 19km, blocks harmful ultraviolet rays from the Sun.
