Caption: Lightning research. Time-exposure image of an artificial lightning bolt striking a model of a church. Since the church is protected by a lightning rod, the current travels safely to earth. The bolt was created by the 800,000-volt impulse generator in the High Voltage Laboratory at Herriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland. For a picture of an artificial lightning discharge damaging unprotected buildings see image E180/403.
