Caption: Weather forecasting. Meteorologists monitoring the progress of a severe storm on radar-generated displays of the storm's intensity and direction. Doppler radar uses radio waves to detect atmospheric phenomena such as rain drops, snow crystals or hail pellets. The information is converted electronically into pictures showing the location and movement of weather systems. Different colours represent different intensities of wind and rainfall. The direction and speed of wind can be derived from changes in frequency of the radio waves. The data can be used to advise people about approaching adverse weather and for weather research. Photographed in Kansas, USA.
