Caption: Weather balloon launch. Researcher launching a radiosonde weather balloon. The balloon carries a package of instruments (not seen), which measure temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure at an altitude of around 25 kilometres. Tracking the balloon during its journey allows measurement of wind speed and direction. Eventually the balloon will burst at high altitude and the instruments will return to Earth by parachute. Study of the atmosphere allows more accurate weather forecasting and enables environmental change to be monitored. Photographed in the Antarctic.
