Caption: Water level recorder in a river, being adjusted by a scientist. It uses float activation of a gearing assembly to move a pen across a chart drum. The chart drum is driven by a spring-wound clock. Depending on the application and choice of clock cycle, instruments can be left unattended for up to one month of continuous recording of water level variations. Recording of water levels can help monitor the relationship to rainfall and the amounts of sunlight. Action can also be taken if the water levels are dangerously high or low.
