Caption: Climate change research. Researcher working at a computer with an iceberg displayed on the screen. Icebergs are studied as an important indicator of global climate change. They form from the coastal edges of large ice sheets, such as those covering Antarctica and Greenland. It is thought that rising global temperatures will cause these ice sheets to melt, raising global sea levels and flooding low-lying coastal areas. Increasing numbers of icebergs being formed by the Greenland ice sheet will decrease the salinity of the North Atlantic, and it is thought that this may disrupt the Gulf Stream and make the UK climate colder than it is today.
