Caption: Antarctic weather balloon research. Researchers preparing to release a weather balloon over Antarctica. The balloon carries instruments that record data about the air through which it passes as it rises upwards. The temperature, humidity, composition, and height are some of the data recorded. The Concordia base is seen in the background. This base was completed in 2005. It is over 1000 kilometres inland, high on the Antarctic plateau at an altitude of 3233 metres, at the location called Dome C. It is a permanent, all- year research station, the third to be built in Antarctica. It is jointly operated and run by France and Italy.
