Caption: Lightning research. Researcher holding two aircraft panels to show the effects of artificial lightning strikes. The panel at right has been charred, while the one at left has been dented and the paint blasted off the area of impact. Further, unseen structural damage can be identified using equipment such as a laser interferometer (see E180/541). This work is being carried out at CESI (the Italian Experimental Electrotechnical Centre) in Milan, Italy. Here, experiments are carried out to test the effect of artificial lightning strikes on various objects and materials. Lightning research has been carried out at CESI since 1970.
