Caption: Lightning detector measurement scale, used to record data such as the number of strikes detected during a year, and the direction of the strikes (but not the precise distance). This is a CIGRE detector, operated by CESI (Italian Experimental Electrotechnical Centre), based in Milan, Italy. This device detects the low-frequency radio waves formed by a lightning strike. It operates in the 10 kilo-Hertz range and can detect lightning strikes within a radius of about 45 kilometres. The CESI lightning detector network, SIRF (Sistema Italiano Rilevamento Fulmini), was formed in 1994.
