Caption: Arctic ozone research. Weather balloon being launched in the Arctic to study the ozone layer in the stratosphere, 15-35 kilometres above the surface of the Earth. The balloon is carrying a spectrometer to measure the amount of chlorine and chlorine dioxide gases. The latter, formed during reactions of chlorine with ozone, is a measure of how badly chlorine released by human activities has affected the ozone layer. Ozone (O3) is a gas that filters most of the harmful ultraviolet component of sunlight. This work is part of THESEO (the Third European Stratospheric Experiment on Ozone), a joint NASA-EU project that took place from November 1999 to March 2000, at Esrange Research Station, Kiruna, which lies inside the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland.
