Caption: Arctic icebreaker. Icebreakers have reinforced hulls and are used to break through sea ice and open up passageways for other ships. This is the icebreaker Fesco Sakhalin, built at the Aker Yards in Finland. It is a double-acting icebreaker, which means it travels bow-first (forwards) in ice-free conditions, but travels stern-first (backwards) when moving through ice. This ship operates on shipping runs for Russia's Far Eastern Shipping Company. Photographed in the Russian Arctic in 2007.
