Caption: A glaciologist in Antarctica extracts an ice core from the apparatus which has drilled it from deep within the Antarctic ice sheet. The glaciologist, a member of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), is dressed in surgical garments in order to minimise contamination of the ice core. The ice core will be transported back to BAS headquarters at Cambridge, England, where various techniques are employed to analyse in extremely fine detail the chemical & radiochemical trace elements it contains. This data provides evidence of past changes in climate & of current trends in the pollution of the atmosphere.
