Caption: Effect of agricultural pollution. The pale green area in the foreground of this picture is a blanket of Common Duckweed (Lemna minor) growing on the water of a ditch. The ditch contains water that has run off from the farmland behind. The weed thrives due to the phosphates in the water, which originated from fertilisers. The weed kills other aquatic plant species, as it blocks out sunlight to lower layers of the water ecosystem.
