Caption: Agricultural pollution. The pale green area in the foreground of this picture is a blanket of Common Duckweed (Lemna minor) growing on the water of a drainage ditch. Cows are seen drinking from this polluted pond. Water has run off from the farmland behind, carrying with it nutrients enriched from agricultural activities. The weed thrives due to the phosphates in the water, which originated from fertilisers and cow dung. Duckweed kills off other aquatic plant species as it blocks out sunlight to lower layers of the water ecosystem.
