Aletsch Glacier. View of the Aletsch Glacier in the Swiss Alps. This is the largest stretch of firn in Europe, firn being accumulating snow which eventually becomes compacted into glacier ice. It is 22 kilometres long and covers an area of 170 square kilometres.
