Caption: Thin-veined lichen (Peltigera membranacea, grey/ white), close-up. A lichen is composed of an alga and a fungus, which have a mutually beneficial (mutualistic) relationship: the alga produces carbohydrates for the fungus by photosynthesis, and the fungus protects the alga from harsh conditions. The thin-veined lichen is found at the base of stone walls, and is more common in damp environments. It is able to survive long periods of drought and to absorb water very quickly. It is seen here in its hydrated form, after rainfall. Photographed in Scotland. For this lichen before rainfall, see image B350/135.
