Caption: Map of the world's major ocean currents. This image is derived from altimetry data, and shows the variability of sea surface height relative to a long-term mean value. The effect of this is to highlight major ocean currents (yellow, red and white). Of particluar interest are the Agulhas Current (south of Africa, bottom left), the Kuroshio Current (off Japan, upper centre) and the Gulf Stream (off North America, top right). Dark blue areas are regions of stable sea heights, such as in the centres of oceans. The data for this image were gathered by the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite on 3-12 October 1992.
