Caption: Adriatic algae, seen from space. Satellite image of the east coast of Italy, showing a large algae bloom (or carpet) seen here colour-enhanced as red. The algae feed on pollutants pouring into the Adriatic Sea from rivers such as the Po; the Po delta may be seen near top left. Just north of the delta, another river outflow may be seen as a small sediment plume. As in so many other parts of the Mediterranean Sea, this section of the Adriatic coast is heavily polluted, largely by sewage and by run-off from agricultural processes. The data for this image were gathered by a Landsat satellite.
