Caption: Global sea temperatures. Coloured computer model of global sea temperatures based on satellite data. The surface temperature of the Earth's oceans has been colour-coded and combined with a projection of the land surface (grey). The temperature varies from a warm 35 degrees Celsius (yellow) in the tropics, through red, blue, purple and green to a freezing minus 2 degrees Celsius (black) in the polar regions. Taken in July 2001, summer in the northern hemisphere and winter in the southern hemisphere. Data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite. MODIS improves previous data by better measurements of tropical water temperatures.
