Caption: Tsunami simulation. Third of 3 three-dimensional computer simulation images showing a giant sea wave (tsunami) off the European coast, 4 hours after its creation near Portugal during an earthquake in 1755. Water is blue and land is yellow. The area covered by the tsunami is shown as ripples on the otherwise flat surface of the sea. Tsunamis travel at up to 725-800 kilometres per hour in deep water. This computer model was designed as part of the international Genesis and Impact of Tsunamis on European Coasts (GITEC) project to assess the effects of possible tsunamis in the future. (See photo's E275/003 & E275/004).
