Caption: Before tsunami. Image 1 of 2. Infrared satellite image of the coastline around Port Blair, capital of the Andaman and Nicobar islands in the Indian Ocean. This image was obtained on 25 February 2004. The colours show: forest vegetation (red), farmland (green, left), buildings (pale blue, centre right: Port Blair and airstrip), and the sea (turquoise). This area is about 15 kilometres across. On 26 December 2004, a massive underwater earthquake, 700 kilometres away near Indonesia, created huge waves, or tsunamis, that devastated the region. SPOT 5 satellite image. For the post-tsunami image, see E275/019.
