Caption: Coastal rock pool. A sand-bottomed rock pool with seaweed and algae. Patterns in sand at the bottom of the pool clearly show the direction of flow of tidal water. This is a very good example of the ecology of a rocky coastline, with dark-coloured seaweeds in the intertidal part of the shoreline, and brighter green algae inhabiting the rocks below the mean low-water line. The very rounded nature of the rocks, the presence of sand in the rock pool and the coastal stack (on horizon at left) indicate that this area is prone to severe storms. This photograph was taken in Sandwood Bay on the north-west coast of Scotland.
