Caption: Spitak earthquake damage, Armenia. Photographs of schoolchildren in the rubble of a school destroyed by the earthquake of 1988. The earthquake occurred at 11:41 local time (07:41 GMT) on 7 December 1988 in the Spitak region of Armenia, which was at the time part of the USSR. The town of Spitak was heavily damaged, and due to the timing, many schoolchildren were killed. Total fatalities were estimated at 50,000. Photographed on 9 December 1988, at high school number 3, in Spitak, Armenia.
