Caption: Stereomicroscope photograph of the fruiting plant of the moss Schistidium apocarpum. The orange structures are the fruiting capsules which contain spores. These capsules are commonly produced in winter and spring. When they open to release their contents the apertures are ringed by peristome teeth which can be seen here, and are diagnostic of the species. This is a widespread plant commonly found on walls and on mortar between bricks, since it favours calcareous substrates. Magnification: x3.2 at 35mm size.
