Caption: Chain of volcanoes in Java, seen from space. This east-looking view shows a chain of volcanoes in Java. Many of the volcanoes appear as dark areas, but all are surrounded by small areas of white clouds. The volcanoes are (from bottom to top): Gunang Merapi (2911m); Gunang Lawu (3265m); Gunang Liman (2563m); Gunang Butak (2874m); Gunang Mahameru (3676m); Gunang Argapuro (3809m) and Gunang Ruang (3332m). Cloud areas higher in the frame are over the islands of Bali and Sumbawa. Most of these volcanoes have been active in the last few thousand years. This photograph was taken by the crew of Shuttle Atlantis during Mission STS-46 of 31 July - 8 August 1992.
