Caption: False-colour satellite image of Mount Fuji, Japan. Mount Fuji (known as Fuji-san in Japan) is the white snow-capped feature just below centre. Mt Fuji is a classic strato-volcano, with smooth concave sides. It is 3776 metres high and 30 kilometres across its base. The crater itself is 700 metres in diameter and 100 metres deep. The cone is seen as dark green, with a black deposit of ash from its 1707 eruption. Surrounding mountain vegetation is seen as mid-green, with lowland cultivated land as pale green. Settlements on riverine alluvial soils are shown as magenta. This image was gathered by a Landsat satellite in October 1984.
