Caption: Mount Etna. Coloured multitemporal radar image showing Mount Etna, a large active volcano in Sicily. The crater of mount Etna is the dark feature just upper left of centre. This image was made by combining three separate views taken on different dates over a period of nine months. The colours represent changes to the surface between frames. White patches are towns, notably Catania just south of Etna. The red colours in the lower left are fields with crop growth. The strange colours in the sea at right are due to changes in wave patterns. The data for this image were gathered by the European ERS-1 radar mapping satellite.
