Caption: Fissure zone craters. View of several volcanic craters along a fissure zone on Lanzarote, Canary Islands. These craters are called the Montanas del Fuego. A fissure zone is a line of weakness in the Earth's crust. Magma from deep in the Earth can well up and erupt over the surface. The blackened area surrounding the craters is made up of solidified lava.
